The Difference Between Ptosis Repair and Blepharoplasty

By Joseph Walrath, MD | Jun 18, 2017 | Blepharoplasty, Ptosis

Upper lid surgery can be confusing.  Let’s demystify!  The following panels explain the difference between ptosis repair and upper blepharoplasty.

Basically, think of upper blepharoplasty as removal of tissue.  There is nothing else to it.  Sure, there are nuances, specifically based on lid crease and lid fold creation.  But at it’s heart, the procedure involves tissue removal.

Contrast that with ptosis repair.  Ptosis repair is all about changing the eyelid height.  Ptosis repair does not itself involve tissue removal, though some fat and skin is often removed at the same time.  Ptosis repair involves manipulation of the muscles that make the eyelid open and close.

See the comic panels for a detailed description of how it all works!
